The Living Heritage Trust of Sri Lanka is dedicated to the conservation of Sri Lanka’s unique cultural heritage and traditional wisdom. LHT has recently started to operate a new venture in Koslanda, one of the most beautifully situated towns in Sri Lanka. The aim of the project is to leverage the natural assets and traditional working practices of the region, providing access to new skills and better markets.

The project will improve the living standards of this rural community, and arrest the destructive farming practices and urban migration that are gradually destroying the community. Several projects are being initiated including computer and English literacy classes, development of organic farming and specialist agricultural products, livelihoods work using sustainable local materials and small tourism ventures.

We are currently seeking a Geographic Information Specialist to lead a project to create an automated map of the Koslanda area (approx 10 km sq). This will be a ground breaking initiative in Sri Lanka and will provide essential information for our work with the local community over the coming years, as well as being a model for similar programmes country wide.

Job Description

Programme organisation
This can begin long distance from your home country and be completed upon your arrival in Sri Lanka.
  • Advise LHT management on necessary equipment to be purchased.
  • Create a programme work plan and budget to be presented to the LHT Board.
  • To build an educational / training aspect into this programme, working with local school children and young people.
  • Apply international GIS/GPS mapping standards, procedures and knowledge
Programme implementation
  • To use GPS mapping technology to create a comprehensive map of the Koslanda area, to include environmental data, land use/land cover data and other topics required.
  • Preparation of supporting materials such as reports, statistics, digital data.
  • Make this information available on the internet
  • Training and leadership of LHT staff and local community in GPS compentency and GIS mapping skills.

Experience and Skills

Essential
  • Several years of experience in the field of GIS/GPS mapping.
  • Previous experience of project design and implementation.
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • An excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes
  • Comfortable working in cross-cultural environments
  • Independent worker
  • Good people skills and organisational skills
  • Flexibility and creativity in problem solving
Desired
  • Some knowledge of spoken Tamil or Sinhalese
  • Previous experience working overseas
  • International bike license
